HMRC debt rarely comes from one thing — and it never fixes itself

HMRC DebtSense™ is built for self-employed, CIS and small-business taxpayers who've fallen behind, been hit with a bill they didn't expect, or simply lost track of where they stand.

"I've had a demand I can't pay"

A bill, a Notice to Pay, or a payment-on-account shock. You need to know what's really owed and what your options are — before the deadline, not after.

📈

"It's spiralled — penalties and interest"

Late-filing penalties, late-payment penalties, daily interest. The original debt is now the smallest part of the problem. Some of it may be challengeable.

"I don't even know how it built up"

Multiple years, estimated assessments, missing returns. We reconstruct the picture so you finally understand what's owed, for what, and why.

⚠️

"HMRC is threatening enforcement"

Debt collection agency, distraint, or court action looming. Acting early opens doors — Time to Pay, appeals and relief — that close once enforcement starts.

The free review

A complete picture of where you stand with HMRC

We take your HMRC letters and the details you give us and build a clear, written summary of your full tax position — across every tax and every year. No cost, no obligation.

📊

Every liability, mapped

Self Assessment, VAT, PAYE, CIS, penalties and interest — all your balances pulled into one clear picture, by year and by type.

🔎

Why you're here

A plain-English root-cause read: missed returns, estimated assessments, under-claimed expenses, or cash-flow timing. You'll finally understand it.

⚖️

What's owed vs. what's challengeable

We check whether penalties, surcharges or estimated figures can be appealed, reduced or replaced with correct returns — so you don't overpay.

🛣️

Your routes out

Time to Pay arrangements, payment plans, appeals, overpayment relief, bringing returns up to date — matched to your actual position.

💷

Affordability snapshot

A realistic view of what you could offer HMRC and over what period — the groundwork for a Time to Pay arrangement that actually holds.

Clear next steps & fixed fee

You leave the review knowing exactly what to do next — and, if you want us to handle it, a fixed price for resolution depending on your position.

How it works

Three steps — and the first one takes five minutes

No forms to dig out, no jargon. Send us what you've got and we do the rest.

1

Tell us your position

Fill in the short form below with your name, phone and email, and upload any HMRC letters you've received. A photo or PDF is fine.

2

We build your tax position

Our specialists review your letters and, with your authority, check your HMRC record to assemble every liability, penalty and interest charge.

3

Free review & costed plan

You get a written summary and a call: what's owed, why, what's challengeable, and your options — with a fixed-fee quote if you'd like us to resolve it.

The debt won't go away on its own — but your options shrink the longer you wait

HMRC interest accrues daily, penalties escalate, and once a debt moves to enforcement — debt-collection agencies, distraint, or court — the room to negotiate narrows fast. The earlier we see your position, the more we can do: appeal what's wrong, correct estimated assessments, and agree affordable terms before HMRC decides them for you.

Questions

Straight answers

What do I need to get started?
Just your name, phone and email — and any letters HMRC has sent you (a photo on your phone is fine). The more we can see, the more complete your review, but we can start from very little.
I'm already being chased / threatened with enforcement — is it too late?
No — this is exactly when a review matters most. Acting before enforcement escalates keeps your options open: appeals, correcting estimated assessments, and agreeing an affordable Time to Pay arrangement. Tell us the deadline on your letter and we'll prioritise it.
Can you actually reduce what I owe?
Sometimes, yes — where penalties or surcharges can be appealed, where HMRC's estimated assessments are too high, or where unfiled returns and unclaimed expenses change the picture. We can't promise a reduction, but the free review tells you honestly what's challengeable and what isn't.
Will this stop interest and penalties?
Getting returns filed and an arrangement agreed stops further late-filing penalties building and limits late-payment penalties. Interest generally runs until the debt is paid, but agreeing terms early keeps it from compounding through enforcement.
What does resolution cost?
The review is free. If you want us to resolve the debt, we quote a fixed fee after the review, once we know what your position needs — a guided option where we prepare everything for you to submit, or a fully managed option where we act as your agent and deal with HMRC directly.
Can you deal with HMRC for me?
Yes. Maximum Rebate is a full HMRC tax practice. With your authority we can act as your agent — handling appeals, overpayment relief, outstanding returns and Time to Pay negotiations from start to finish.
Is my data safe?
Your details and uploaded documents are stored securely and used only for your review, handled under the Maximum Rebate privacy policy, with software provided by SmartScanit Group. Any resolution payment is processed by Stripe — we never see your card.
